For a glimpse of the vibrant history of Newburgh, stop by the exhibit of work by news photograhper Ralph Aiello who captured some of the city’s most significant events of the 20th century. The exhibit is open every Sunday afternoon at the Newburgh Historical Society’s Crawford House on Montgomery Street through the end of 2010.
Mr. Aiello was an award-winning Newburgh photojournalist and photographer who worked for the Newburgh Evening News and who won many national awards from the Photographic Society of America. The exhibit will feature many pictures of famous people who have visited the area—politicians, actors, generals—as well as photographs of Newburgh’s past history as he saw it.
“It is appropriate that the exhibit is at the Crawford House,” said his daughter, Cathy Aiello Cahill, “because so many of the images are within a few miles of this house. While my father’s work captures and illuminates the timeless beauty in our midst—the river, mountains, steeples—the goal of the Historical Society is to preserve and promote Newburgh’s past.”
The exhibit will feature pictures of Newburgh’s past that no longer exist: the Newburgh ferry boats and station, Water Street as it was before urban renewal, Broadway lit up by theater marquees, a beautiful arched bridge in Downing Park. In addition are photographs of Newburgh’s everyday life: a snow storm stopping traffic on Broadway, the construction of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, or a stunning view of Newburgh’s steeples rising up among the Hudson Highlands. Mr. Aiello spent the last two years of his life writing his memoirs, “My Small World.” It was published shortly before his death and is available for sale at the Crawford House Gift Shop.
