The town of Newburgh is considering a tentative $17.7 million budget for 2011 that would raise property taxes by 1.9 percent over the current year.
Town supervisor Wayne Booth said that conservative spending and control over growth has resulted in the relatively small increase in the size of the budget. Most of the additional costs, he said, resulted from increases in employee health care and pensions. He noted that 2009 was a tougher year for the town, when it had to eliminate nine full-time positions. No lay-offs are projected for 2011, he said.
The town justice courts would see a six percent increase to $430,551 if the budget is adopted by the town board. Booth said this includes expanded storage for court records. The highway department budget line is dropping in the proposed budget from 172,900 to 159,200 a result of projected savings in electricity and fuel, according to Booth
