Newburgh Heights Association, Inc., a non-profit neighborhood improvement corporation in Newburgh, is the first area non-profit organization to avoid loss of its tax-exempt status by having its tax return filed by Jacobowitz & Gubits, LLP, working in conjunction with The Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan.
The IRS has announced that non-profit corporations that have failed to file tax returns for the past three years have until October 15, 2010, to file the Form 990-N or risk losing their tax-exempt status. The Community Foundation reached out to hundreds of local non-profits identified by the IRS as being at risk. The Jacobowitz firm offered to file the forms at no cost.
Newburgh Heights Association President Ariyike Diggs said, “It is challenging for volunteer community groups like the Newburgh Heights Association to stay on top of what needs to be done in order to maintain their non-profit status. The NHA had a period of inactivity, during which our tax returns fell through the cracks. We are grateful for the assistance that The Community Foundation and Jacobowitz & Gubits have provided to the NHA with regard to this very important matter. Now we can use our tax-exempt status and work to improve the quality of life in the Washington Heights neighborhood of the city of Newburgh.”
Non-profits interested in having the tax form filed at no cost should contact the Community Foundation at (845) 769-9393, Ext. 2.
