The Newburgh fire department is investigating the cause of a fire on Tuesday night that destroyed a commercial property on Lake Street .
Assistant fire chief Stephen Giacco was on the scene Wednesday morning sifting through the charred wreckage of the 3,900 square foot building across from the Mid-Hudson Family Health Center. He said that the building will likely be condemned.
Giacco reported that the fire began in the rear office of the commercial space that was occupied by the building owner’s, Lakeside Plaza Associates. The front retail space was not occupied and a sign out front advertised the property for rent. An adjoining space that is the site of a pizza restaurant suffered smoke damage but will likely be able to continue operation, he said.
Giacco said that the fire was reported last night around 8 pm and five city fire department units under the command of acting chief Scott Mandowski, as well as units from Vails Gate, New Windsor, Cornwall, and Coldenham responded to the blaze, which was brought under control within 45 minutes.
