By Kerry Butrick, Newburgh Enlarged School District
Students at Balmville Elementary School in Newburgh recently received a special visit from Congressman Maurice Hinchey. Hinchey toured the facility and visited students in their classrooms briefly to explain his role as a representative for New York’s 22nd Congressional District, which spans eight counties from the Hudson Valley to the Finger Lakes region.
Hinchey spoke to the students about the value and importance of excelling in the classroom and striving for academic achievement. “Education is instrumental in what you are going to do in your life,” explained Hinchey. Hinchey explained to students that his job as a Congressman is to make sure that the decisions being made locally and in Washington, D.C. will be positive for students in his respective Congressional area. “My job is to represent you, your family, and friends in Washington and to make sure this educational system is strong and vey effective,” he told the young audience.
When asked by one student if he liked him job and traveling back and forth to Washington, Hinchey explained that although time consuming at times, “My job gives me the opportunity to do many positive things for the community.” Students in Kristine Campbell-DeFoe’s class were given the opportunity to ask the Congressman questions ranging from his favorite sports team to questions surrounding his input on the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico earlier this year.
