From Ann Kuzmik, City of Newburgh
From now until the end of October, visitors to City Hall at 83 Broadway, Newburgh can enjoy the paintings of Barbara Brewer.
A resident of the Town of Newburgh most of her life, Barbara began painting while in high school at Newburgh Free Academy back in the 60′s when she also produced works of ceramics, sculpture and photography.
During the years that followed Barbara explored other venues in crafting and put her painting on hold for about 30 years. She is an avid paper crafter and is a certified scrapbooking instructor at Michaels Arts & Crafts in Newburgh. She also applies her skills to jewelry and specializes in wire wrapping and bead stitching and creates jewelry from rocks she collects.
After recovering from a serious illness in 2003, Barbara resumed her artwork. . “Life is so short and precious and I realized it was time to return to something that I truly loved to do,” Barbara said. She began painting with the town of New Windsor’s senior citizen art class and studied with other local artists.
Barbara has shown her work in the Newburgh Free Library Art Show numerous times, the Town of New Windsor Art Show, and New Windsor Senior Art Show at City Hall in Newburgh. Barbara’s artwork has also been displayed at Benmarl Winery, Marlboro, and Stoutridge Vineyards as part of a “paint out” a few years ago. Presently Barbara’s artwork is displayed at Picture It Framed in the Town of Newburgh.
Barbara prefers to work in acrylics and watercolors and her favorite subjects are taken from nature, including the Hudson River valley. Her latest interest has led her to include exotic birds in her artwork. “Being a bird breeder for the last 20 years I felt it was about time to pay tribute to some of the beautiful birds I share my life with,” she commented.
