Shoppers at the Poughkeepsie Galleria got a surprise earlier this month when the food court was taken over by a group of 100 students from Newburgh Free Academy who performed a Flash Mob Dance with no warning.
The performance starts with one dancer who seems to randomly start a dance and is joined by more and more dancers who create a large choreographed dance routine.
NFA Dance Teacher Mandy Clifford says that flash mob dances are a world-wide phenomenon, and she thought the students would have fun being part of it.
“Flash mob dances are popping up all over the world – in train stations, malls, and other public venues. I wanted to do something that would make the NFA Dance students feel like they are a part of the global dance community,” Clifford said. “It was my hope that the students could have a unique and positive experience that would excite them about dance. The food court at the Poughkeepsie Galleria provided a perfect performance arena that was full of unsuspecting observers.”
After coordinating the event with the Poughkeepsie Galleria and school district, Clifford taught the dance to students in her Creative Movement, Modern I, Modern II, and Advanced Dance classes. “It was great to see the reaction of the audience and to see my students having so much fun. I’m hopeful that we can do another flash mob dance in the future,” explained Clifford.
