
The parents of students at the Fostertown magnet school cooked food from Latin America to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

Students in Gissel Gil-Arias’s bilingual second grade and Maria Cepeda’s bilingual first grade classes at Fostertown ETC Magnet School in Newburgh held a special celebration on October 15, 2010, culminating Hispanic Heritage Month, which is held from September 15th until October 15th.
According to Gil-Arias, parents were invited to cook a traditional dish and celebrate with the students in a potluck style buffet luncheon for students, parents and their teachers. The teachers explained that it is important for the students to experience different cultures and traditions as well as share their own culture with other students.

Students at Temple Hill Academy held the flags of many nations at the opening of the Olympic-style event.
Students at Temple Hill Academy in New Windsor participated in the annual Olympics Opening Ceremony recently on Thurs., Oct. 14, 2010. Students exited the building one by one with each class proudly waving flags representing various countries. The annual event promotes a healthy lifestyle through physical fitness as well as fostering friendly competition between the students. Student torch runners as well as physical education teachers jogged two laps around the parking lot before teacher Chris Leggett lit the Temple Hill Academy Olympic torch on the steps in front of the school.
Leggett explained that from now until the spring, students will participate in athletic and academic competitions as part of the Olympics. The athletic portion consists of a competition that is broken down into Olympic Trials, conducted in individual PE classes, where every student participates. In addition, this year students will be able to use the new track for outdoor running events along with indoor competitions.

Students and parents from Gardnertown Fundamental Magnet School in Newburgh came together on a recent weeknight as part of the Gardnertown Association of Parents and Staff (G.A.P.S) monthly meeting. In conjunction with October’s Parent Involvement Month, the students and their parents shared the evening creating notecards to be used as a school fundraiser in the future.
