The Ann Street Gallery’s new exhibition, CUT IT UP! Contemporary Papercutters Exhibition, opens with an Artist Reception on Saturday, November 13, from 6-9 pm.
In CUT IT UP!, 11 divergent artists come together to reveal how paper cutting is igniting the imaginations of today’s contemporary artists and provides insight into the enormous creative potential of one of our most common materials: paper. These artists explore a spectrum of techniques from the most basic cutting, folding, tearing, and collage, which expose the infinite possibilities of the medium that makes for the creation of innovative art.

Paper cutting as an art form is practiced around the world and presently enjoying a renaissance as organizations, blogs, and books on the subject turn up everywhere.
Historically, papercutting designs evolved worldwide in a plethora of uniquely different cultural styles. The earliest existing paper cuts are known to be Chinese, dating from around the 6th century. In ancient India, a practical technique of paper cut called a stencil was developed for painting designs on silk. The stencil has been adapted and enjoys a popular revival among contemporary graffiti artists, such as the notable Banksy. While American artist Kara Walker’s work has given a rebirth to the 18th century European technique of silhouette cutting, which was used to create her highly politicized large-scale installations.
As a survey of contemporary works from the astoundingly intricate to the painstakingly detailed, these eleven artists in the CUT IT UP! exhibition clearly demonstrate that they have found a perfect medium for experimentation, while working to redefine paper’s potential in reaching new artistic heights.
