A Newburgh resident is boxing his way to international fame and this Saturday he’ll be fighting in an undercard match of what is perhaps the most anticipated game of the year when Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez face off for the middleweight championship at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Orlandito Del Valle is the New York State featherweight champion who came to Newburgh from Puerto Rico five years ago. He has a record of 10-0-0 and eight knock-outs. Orlandito will be facing in a rematch, the experienced Mexican Noe López, Jr. ( 6-6-3, 4KO’s ).
In their first fight, López injured his right hand at the end of the second round, provoking this, the termination of the fight.
According to his Facebook page, Orlandito, who is related to former WBO bantamweight champion Rafael Del Valle, began boxing at the age of 14 at the Caná Boxing Club in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Too young to try out for the 2004 Olympic team, his trainer sent him to New York where he won both the New York and National Golden Gloves tournaments representing Newburgh Boxing Club. He still trains at the boxing club on Washington Street most days.
As for this Saturday’s fight, Del Valle said in a prepared statement, “”We are honored to be part of this great event. We’re in the final stage of training and we are confident thet we will return with the victory.”
