From Kerry Butrick, Newburgh Enlarged School District
On Sat., Oct. 30, 2010, approximately 300 South Middle School (SMS) students and their families attended the third annual “Books-n-Breakfast” event held in the SMS Cafeteria. This year, the event included Halloween-themed music and participants were encouraged to dress up in costume. According to SMS Assistant Principal Mike Ragusa, the event offered an opportunity for parents, students, and teachers to come together in a family-friendly environment that fosters relations between home life and school.
A highlight this year was the appearance of Ragusa, a former professional boxer from the Newburgh Boxing Club, who challenged the students to keep the fighting off the streets by becoming productive members of the community and harnessing their passions into positive ventures.
In addition, Ragusa explained that parent involvement is vitally important for the overall academic success of the students. He credited the success of “Books-n-Breakfast” again this year to the parents and students in attendance as well as the 40 teachers and building staff members that volunteered to be a part of the event. In addition, students and teachers from the NFA Culinary Arts Department utilized their background in food services to help order and prepare food for the event for the third year in a row.
