The city of Newburgh has appointed a new comptroller. Acting City Manager Richard F. Herbek announced on Wednesday that Cheryl
s will start in that position three months after the resignation of her predecessor, Christine Mitchell. Ms. Gross will start her new assignment on December 20, 2010.
A graduate of Mount Saint Mary College with a degree in accounting, Ms. Gross is a native of the city of Newburgh and serves on the city’s Financial Advisory Committee.
She has an associates degree in accounting science from Orange County Community College and more than 30 years of experience,. Ms. Gross has served as District Treasurer of Washingtonville School District for the past 5 years and was a junior accountant for the Newburgh Enlarged City School District and Treasurer for the Village of Maybrook. She is a member of New York State Association of School Business Officials (NYSABO) and chairperson of NYSABO Treasurer’s Steering Committee.
In announcing her appointment, the acting city manager noted that Ms. Gross has administered an $83 million General Fund budget and has extensive experience in investments, bookkeeping, financial reporting and oversight of internal controls. She is also a volunteer firefighter in Goodwill Fire Company.
“Cheryl’s service on the Financial Advisory Committee and her past experience in municipal and school district governmental settings have well prepared her to deal with the fiscal challenges that face the City of Newburgh. I am pleased to have her on board as Comptroller,” Acting City Manager Richard F. Herbek said in a prepared statement.
In the same press release, Ms. Gross said her priorities include establishing internal controls to ensure the proper administration of all City funds, and working with department heads on strategies to cut costs and maximize their budgeted funds.
The last city comptroller, Ms. Mitchell, was in the position for barely seven months before announcing her resignation.
