A thief stole dozens of wrapped gifts that had been donated to the Salvation Army to distribute to local children this holiday season. City of Newburgh police are investigating the theft that occurred on Friday, December 17th between 7:15 and 7:30 pm.
Police say that the packages were piled inside the reception area of the Salvation Army’s main entrance at 234 Van Ness Street when the receptionist left the area to use the restroom. When the returned, the gifts were gone. Police attempted a K9 track but due to the number of people in and out of the building and in the area of the gifts, the K9 could not get a clear scent.
The City of Newburgh Police Department and the Salvation Army are asking for the public’s help. Anyone with information regarding this crime is asked to contact the City of Newburgh Police Detective Division at (845) 561-3131. Anyone looking to donate new unwrapped presents can drop off gifts for children under the age of 13 to the Salvation Army at 234 Van Ness St. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
