Elsie Defreitas and Sean Young of the city of Newburgh started the new year with a bang when their son, Kyle Ethan Young, was the first baby to be born in 2011 at Luke’s Cornwall Hospital.
Baby Kyle weighed in a 5 pounds, 12 ounces following his birth at 4:30 pm on January 1, 2011. He was born six weeks prematurely and was admitted to SLCH’s Elaine Kaplan Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for remedial breathing therapy and observational management. This is the second consecutive year that the hospital’s first baby of the New Year was admitted to the NICU, one of the only Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the region.
Hospital officials report that apart from his premature status, baby Kyle was healthy, with a full head of dark hair and bright brown eyes. He is scheduled to go home in a few days.
“We’re so excited to have a healthy New Year baby boy,” said Kyle’s mother, Elsie. “And we’re grateful to the kind, knowledgeable staff in both the birthing center and the NICU,” echoed father, Sean.
