This scultpure, The Angel of Protection, is inspired by an African tradition of an angel that brings hope to a community.

To counter the dark days of winter, the public is invited to tour an exhibit of colorful art on display in the lobby of the Newburgh Free Public Library starting January 6th.
The brilliant murals, sculpture and giant puppets are the work of members of the Youth Arts Group of the Rural and Migrant Ministry who have put their creative juices to work to tell the world about the need for social justice.
Andres Chamorro is the co-ordinator of the group, which is made up of 15 talented high school age teens from Sullivan and Orange County. Chamorro said that the teens meet every week and talk about issues of racism, poverty and violence in their community and how they can use theater and art to raise awareness of the problems they face.
The pieces in the show include a mural that the teens created to show the exploitation of Latinos in an egg factory in Sullivan county and large puppets that have been used in theater productions. One of the puppets on display shows a female agricultural worker who is sickened by pesticides.
If you visit the show, which is on display through the end of the month, be sure to take a look at the notebooks where the teens are asking visitors to leave their comments and reactions both to the art and to the social issues they seek to raise.
