From St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital
St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital has received many strange requests from moms-to- be over the years, but this week the Birthing Center received a request unlike anything they’ve ever heard before.
Mom- to-be, Kimberly Tennant arrived at the hospital Tuesday evening, for the birth of her first child. She had one request: to Skype the birth to husband Matthew, who is currently stationed in Korea as a Captain in the U.S. Army.
With the cooperation of Dr. Custodio Borgueta, Mid-Wife Clarice Schwartz and the SLCH IT Department, the happy couple was “together” for the birth of Jackson Matthew Tennant.
“We thought he was going to miss the birth entirely,” said Kimberly. “I thought the whole world was going to meet my son before his dad got a chance to see him. I couldn’t be happier with the way everything worked out.”
Twenty hours after arriving at SLCH, dad, Matthew was there “live” on the computer screen, encouraging his wife throughout the labor. The nurses chatted with Matthew like he was in the room.
“Everyone at the hospital from the nurses to the IT guys couldn’t have been more wonderful,” said Kimberly. “As soon as the baby was born, I held him up to the computer screen for Matthew to see; it was such a special moment.”
Captain Tennant has been stationed in Korea since September 2010, and plans to return home for one month in April to see his son. The couple lives in the Town of Newburgh.
