Elizabeth Stradar Santiago is breaking new ground at the Powelton Club in Balmville, where she is the first woman elected president of the 128-year-old country club.
Ms. Santiago is no stranger to the Powelton. She’s been a member since childhood and her father, George Strader, has served as president, too. She’s held many positions on the club’s board of directors, including vice president and membership chairman and is credited with increasing Powelton membership by 72 members.
“It’s an honor to lead The Powelton Club as we continue to expand our membership to individuals, families, and corporations alike,” said Ms. Santiago, who is a practicing attorney in Newburgh. “To me, the Powelton’s success is due in no small part to it remaining a Club which appreciates its history and yet has an eye toward continuous improvement and remaining a modern facility.”
The Powelton Club is a private country club established in 1882, making it one of the oldest country clubs in the United States. It offers a full-service clubhouse, a Devereux Emmet designed 18 hole golf course, along with five red clay tennis courts, and two outdoor swimming pools.
