A police stop of a vehicle being driven erratically in the area of Liberty and Farrington Streets in the city of Newburgh on Friday night led to the arrest of a man for criminal possession of a semi-automatic handgun.
Police say that two plainclothes officers first spotted a 1999 Oldsmobile with erratic behavior around 10 pm and radioed a uniformed officer who stopped the car on South Street.
According to police, the officers spotted a handgun lying on the floor in the back of the vehicle. They then charged 58-year-old Larry Cherry, of the town of Newburgh, with possession of the .22 calibre handgun with six rounds of ammunition.
