Sixteen months after the murder of 4-year-old Marc Bookal, his mother’s boyfriend has been charged with four counts of homicide. Orange County district attorney Frank Philips announced the indictment of 31-year-old Cory Byrd on Wednesday. He is charged with two counts of murder in the second degree and two manslaughter counts.
DA Philips said that at the time of Bookal’s disappearance from his Benkard Avenue home on December 14, 2009, Byrd pretended to cooperate with investigators, saying the toddler had wandered off to visit a neighbor. An exhaustive search failed to turn up the missing boy. His body was found in March 2010 in a bag on South Colden Street near Renwick Street.
City of Newburgh Police Chief Michael Ferrara joined Philips at the news conference, where he said the arrest of Byrd on murder charges comes as a relief. “They waited long and painfully for this outcome,” he said, noting that officers worked day and night to solve the crime.
