Tax Due Date Moved
Taxpayers in the city of Newburgh will be able to pay their property taxes several days after the first of the month after a vote on Tuesday by the Newburgh city council. Newburgh Mayor Nicholas Valentine noted that his office had received a flood of phone calls from residents on fixed incomes who were upset at the earlier deadline on the first day of the month for tax payments. City comptroller Cheryl Gross told the council that even her own mother had called to complain about the payment schedule.
The resolution approved Tuesday sets the due date for the second tax installment on April 6, 2011; the third, on June 7, 2011, and the fourth, on August 5, 2011.
A five percent penalty will be attached beginning the day after each tax installment is due.
Event Permit Moratorium Extended
If you want to hold a public event in the city, you’ll have to be prepared to make your case to the Newburgh city council. On Tuesday, the city council voted to extend a moratorium on permits for events that require overtime or special services from city departments. The moratorium will also apply to city-sponsored events, although budget impacts and the best interest of the community will also be weighed. Individuals and organizations can ask for an exemption by requesting a hearing before the city manager.
The moratorium does not apply to gatherings protected by the First Amendment, but the city retains the right to determine the time, place and manner of these gatherings. Event organizers who re-imburse the cost of city personnel and services are also exempt from the moratorium.
The moratorium is in effect through December 31, 2011.
