City of Newburgh firefighters responded to a blaze on the third floor of a building on Broadway Friday afternoon. The cause of the fire in the bedroom of an apartment is still under investigation, according to assistant fire chief Robert Bain, who also said that no one was injured.
Bain said that the Spanish-speaking male occupant of the bedroom was not at home when the two-alarm fire broke out. He returned later but firefighters had difficulty communicating with him.
Firefighters had to knock out all of the windows on the third floor of the structure at 192 Broadway in order to let the smoke escape. Assistant chief Bain said that one of the building’s occupants on the second floor remained in the building throughout the fire-fighting effort, which relied on mutual assistance for several other fire companies. The ground floor of the building is home to Ace Drug Store.
