City of Newburgh police say that as the weather warms up they will have a stronger law enforcement presence on the streets as a result of partnership with the Orange County Sheriff’s office.
The city police department says that it will work closely with the sheriff’s office to follow crime trends so it can develop a pro-active response. The joint patrols will start with two sheriff deputies on patrol for three days a week, with more to follow as the weather improves. Funding for the additional patrols is coming from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.
Orange County Sheriff Carl Dubois explained in a statement that the patrol effort will concentrate on quality-of-life issues. “This effort dovetails with other law enforcement efforts to provide the city of Newburgh a safe environment,” Dubois said. A joint FBI-ATF task force has been working in the city to address the gang problem, making more than 90 arrests in the past year.
City of Newburgh police chief Michael Ferrara noted that the assistance of the sheriff’s department comes at a time when his department is struggling to combat violent crime during a period of financial crisis. “The police department will continue to use every available resource to target violent crime and make the city of Newburgh a better and safer place,” Ferrara said.
