On Tuesday, when legislators in Albany debated whether to extend a so-called “millionaires tax” on New Yorkers making $200,000 a year or more, a group of Newburgh and area residents protested outside the Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporation office in New Windsor.
The group, led by members of the grassroots Community Voices Heard, said that the development corporation has joined the Committee to Save New York, a group that supports Governor Cuomo’s budget proposal that includes widespread spending cuts and the elimination of the year-old “millionaires tax.”
About fifty people rallied outside the development corporations office, demanding that it step down from the Committee to Save New York.
“Hudson Valley families need good services, education, and jobs, not more tax breaks for the richest three percent of New Yorkers,” said Loretta Manning, a leader with Community Voices Heard who attended the protest with three of her children.
Tuesday protest against the Committee to Save New York and Governor Cuomo’s proposal to eliminate the “millionaire’s tax” is part of a series of actions across the state.
