The Newburgh Armory Unity Center is getting some help from the Open Space Institute, which announced on Wednesday that a $5,000 grant has been awarded to complete a preliminary master plan for the 12-acre property.
The 2011 McHentry Award will fund the work of Alexandra Church, a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design, who will conduct research on the history of the Armory, its surrounding neighborhood and the building itself as part of the grant project. Her goal is to develop a plan for developing and implementing programs at the site.
The state of New York sold the 60,000-square foot building to the city of Newburgh last year for $1 and in January the city agreed to a three-year contract with the non-profit group, Newburgh Armory Unity Center.
The Armory is largely open on the weekend, when a youth basketball league trains hundreds of aspiring players and the center is exploring a variety of options for more uses for the facility, including a soccer league.
The Open Space Institute established the McHenry Awards in 2007 to recognize the upcoming generation of Hudson Valley leaders. It is named for OSI trustee Barney McHenry, a longtime Hudson Valley resident and champion of the region’s cultural and scenic wealth. This year, the award was expanded to four students, including Church.
