Latinos in the city of Newburgh make up 43.3 percent of the total population, according to the newly-released results of the 2010 U.S. Census. That’s a seven percent increase in a decade. Ten years ago, in 2000, people claiming Hispanic or Latino descent made up 36.3 percent of the city’s population.
In 2010, 30.2 percent of the city’s population was reported to be Black and African-American, down from 33 percent in 2000. Another 39.4 percent of the city was found to be white, down from 42.3 percent in 2000, with the remaining five percent spread among people of Asian, Native American and other races.
The census bureau does not count people of Hispanic origin as a race. In fact, some of the Latinos could be counted as Black or white or other race.
The 2010 Census put the total number of city residents at 28, 866, up by1.8 percent or 521 people, from 2000. It also counted the number of housing units – 9, 030 – with 14 percent of those, or 1, 475, vacant.
