Police in the city of Newburgh are cracking down on unlicensed nightclubs. For the second time this month, they shut down an establishment on Friday night, this one at 110 William Street where, police say, they found patrons enjoying mixed drinks, prepared food and listening to music. After finding coolers filled with beer and alcohol, police charged the operator of the business, Michael McLeod, 49, of Newburgh, with selling liquor without a license, a misdemeanor. He had no Health Department certificate to cook and serve food, according to police. The Fire Department also noted several additional code violations.
Two weeks ago, the city police and fire departments shut down a similar operation at 45 S. Lander Street, this one charging a cover charge at the door. On March 11, police charged Devon Smith, age 44, of the Bronx, with selling liquor without a license. Fire Department Officials found serious electrical code violations and were forced to have Central Hudson cut the power supply to the building.
The investigation is continuing into both locations and additional charges and fines are expected. Anyone with additional information into these or other illegal business operations are asked to contact the City of Newburgh Police Department at 561-3131
