A community gathering will be held to celebrate the legacy and remember the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House at 9 Vance Road in Rock Tavern on Monday, April 4, from 7 to 9 pm.
The gathering will revisit the historic events of April 4th. On April 4, 1967, Dr. King gave his historic anti-war speech “Beyond Vietnam” at Riverside Church in New York City when he spoke about racism, materialism, militarism and poverty. One year later, on April 4, 1968, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee where he had gone to support striking sanitation workers.
This April 4th gathering will feature local speakers including Zelbert Moore, Professor of Black Studies, New Paltz; Marge Bell, school social worker, Newburgh School District and City of Newburgh Councilwoman; Rae Lainer and Brenda McPhail, Community organizers from Community Voices Heard; and Rabbi Michael Laxmeter of Congregation Agudas Israel, Newburgh, NY.
Through the spoken word, music, and readings, participants will look deeply at the complete message of Dr. King. There will be a time for reflection and conversation and an opportunity to connect with individuals and organizations who are continuing the work he envisioned.
If you are willing and able, please bring finger-food to share for refreshments afterward, and a non-perishable item for the food pantry. A collection will be taken to benefit Community Voices Heard in Newburgh and Poughkeepsie.
