Students from Newburgh Enlarged City School District elementary schools recently tested their word power in the 2011 Elementary Spelling Bee at Temple Hill Academy in New Windsor.
For nearly two hours, students showed off their spelling ability in front of their peers and others in attendance. After several rounds, Nassiem Waitley, a student at GAMS Tech Magnet School emerged as the overall winner of the spelling bee.

Students also won honors in grades 4 through 6. The Grade 4 Winners:
3rd place – Leilani Catala – Gardnertown
2nd place – Satvik Shukla – Fostertown
1st place – Ada Johnston – Horizons
Grade 5 Winners:
3rd place – DeWilliam Carter – GAMS
2nd place – Supriya Makam – Horizons
1st place – Kayla Maresco – Gardnertown
Grade 6 Winners:
3rd place – Kobe Oates – Balmville
2nd place – Chris Garcia-Milostan – New Windsor
