City councilwoman Christine Bello made it official late Monday night, announcing that she is planning to run for mayor of the city of Newburgh. In a press release, Bello said that she is seeking the endorsement of the Republic committee for her bid for the mayor’s seat. Current mayor and fellow Republican Nicholas Valentine has not publicly stated whether he intends to run for a third term.
In making her announcement, Bello said that the city needs strong leadership to provide a positive attitude about new ideas. “Our people need jobs. The city needs to provide a more business friendly environment if it intends to attract new businesses.,” Bello said. “Our taxpayers cannot sustain the ever-increasing taxes and fees.”
Bello was elected to city council in 2007. Her council seat and that of councilwoman Marge Bell are both up this November, along with the Mayor’s position.
Mayor Valentine said on Tuesday that he has not decided if he will run for a third term as mayor and that he is weighing which way to go. “She (Bello) may be the first one to go,” he said in an interview, “but running for mayor is a lot more time and a lot more difficult than city council.”
Valentine added that he doesn’t think the Republican committee’s endorsement is too important in determining the outcome of the race. “It is never about the party in the city of Newburgh,” he said, “Voters pick the person they trust and believe in.”
Bello charges that during her three and a half years in office the city has lost many opportunities due to poor leadership and “downright incompetence.” She promises that she will be loyal to taxpayers and “fiercely challenge” the status quo.
