From Kerry Butrick, Newburgh Enlarged City School District
The Newburgh Enlarged City School District is focusing on pre-school learning this week as part of the nationwide Week of the Young Child. The Pre-K Center at 191 Washington Street will hold events with the young students all week long and on Thursday, parents and guardians are invited to two information sessions for to learn about the Universal Pre-K Program. The sessions will be held at 9:15 a.m. and 5:15 p.m
The Week of the Young Child highlights the importance of families, early childhood professionals, and communities working together to support every child’s healthy development and early learning.
“Quality early childhood education is one of the best investments that can be made for our children’s future,” said Debra Mahusky, Newburgh Pre-K teacher and President of the Mid-Hudson AEYC, an affiliate chapter of NAEYC. “Research shows that children attending high quality programs are more likely to develop the language, pre-mathematics and social skills they need to succeed in school.”
These local celebrations of the Week of the Young Child are designed to build broader support for early childhood programs that nurture young children’s early learning and growth.
“Early childhood is where our future begins,” said Mahusky. “If we value our children, our families, our schools and our community, we must make accessible, affordable, high quality early childhood education a priority.”
The Newburgh Pre-K Center advocates a comprehensive effort to improve the quality of early childhood education including: supporting the family’s crucial role in early education, providing professional development for teachers, staff and administrators, improving the health and safety for young children, and using developmentally appropriate practices to encourage literacy and learning from birth.
There will be an opening day parade of students and staff around the Washington Street site on Monday, April 11, 2011. In addition, a proclamation will be read announcing the Week of the Young Child after the parade. Throughout the week, guest readers will be visiting to read to individual classes and the week will end with a puppet show by Puppet People on Friday, April 15, 2011.
“Many citizens may not be aware of the correlation between a strong, rigorous Pre-K program and success in later elementary and secondary grades. The New York State Pre-K Learning Standards focus our young learners on skills needed to be successful in kindergarten and later grades,” said Joan Goudy-Crosson, NECSD Coordinator of Universal Pre-K and principal of the Pre-K Center at Washington Street.
