The solar car racing team from Newburgh Free Academy returned home Tuesday night after winning third place in the Shell Eco-Marathon in Houston, Texas.
This year the high school team built a new solar vehicle that competed in the race along with its solar-powered car that won the Dell-Winston Solar Car Challenge in 2007.
Team faculty advisor Chris Eachus said that the 18 members of the team had a great experience in the competition this year and are already making plans to compete in 2012. “We were so excited when we were driving home, we were making plans for next year on paper napkins,” he said.
Team members raised about $8,000 to underwrite the cost of building the car and competing in the Shell Eco-Marathon.
