The Newburgh city council voted Monday to accept the bids for all but two of the properties on auction last week, pulling one at the last minute because of concerns that the buyer would not follow through with renovations.
The approved bids totaled $465,000, with buys re-paying another $200,000 in school taxes.
Prior to approving the sales, city resident Michael Gabor said he was concerned that some of the properties would end up back in the city hands if the new owners don’t start to work on them within the 18-month period allowed by the city. Councilwoman Marge Bell agreed, saying that she doesn’t want to hand property over to people who are just going to make it worse and she voted against one group of bids, though the rest of the council approved it.
Corporation counsel Michelle Kelson said that the bidder on 39 Lutheran Street had not started work on another property purchased in the last auction and, as result, the city council did not approve the new offer from the same bidder.
The council also passed on a bid of $22,000 for a Chambers Street property, agreeing that it may be undervalued.
