Fines for code violations
Are property owners who are ticketed for code violations receiving stiff enough penalties? Once again the issue was discussed at city council on Monday and several members, along with acting city manager Rick Herbek, said they should try to talk with the judges who decide how to fine offenders of the city’s building and maintenance codes.
West Street Medical Park
The city council voted to use $103,000 in Community Block Development Grants to repay the city’s Industrial Development Authority for costs incurred in connection with the West Street Medical Park.
Offers to Help La’Shaun Armstrong
Mayor Valentine said that he has received offers from across the country to help 10-year-old La’Shaun Armstrong, the sole survivor of a tragic drowning in the Hudson river on April 12. One offer came from the Voices of Glory, the three siblings from Marlboro who became a national singing sensation after appearing on America’s Got Talent. The group offered to come to Newburgh to perform a benefit concert for Armstrong any time.
Arbor Day Tree Planting
Friday, April 29 has been declared Arbor Day in the city of Newburgh. The public is invited to attend the ceremonial planting of four trees on the South Street medians from Montgomery Street to Marine Drive, beginning at 9 a.m. A fifth tree will be planted at 136 Dubois Street.
