From Kerry Butrick, Newburgh Enlarged City School District
Recently, Arreda Cotten, Newburgh Enlarged City School District Math Coach for Newburgh Free Academy, collaborated with Mount Saint Mary College Associate Professor of Mathematics Dr. Lee Fothergill and several of his math students for a special event to celebrate Math Awareness Month.
Students from MSMC created booths with activities for NFA students to visit in the afternoon, after school or during a free period. Booths ranged from a variety of topics that students would find in their daily-life including Facebook-related math problems as well as a probability to find the winning number. The event was held at both the NFA Main Campus and NFA North Campus on separate days.
“It was wonderful bridging a local college with the community. Our students are in need of seeing math in a different light and that is just what happened. MSMC students planned an array of booths for our high school students ranging from angles and probability to distances and logic. I think the students enjoyed the time spent working on math as it related to the real world,” explained Cotten.
