The streets of Newburgh are cleaner today thanks to efforts of 200 volunteers who took part in Saturday’s Community Clean-up organized by Safe Harbors of the Hudson. The volunteers divided into teams and picked up trash, using rakes and their hands, along the streets from South Street to Renwick Street and from Dubois Street to the river.
Kristen Cronin of Safe Harbors reports that the crews filled seven 30-foot dumpsters with trash, removed over 60 tires and two dozen mattresses, and filled hundreds upon hundreds of trash bags.
Lots of energetic young people joined the clean-up effort and also took part in the educational program about litter and contamination. Crews from the department of public works also took part, focusing on city-owned properties.
Following the morning clean-up, participants enjoyed a barbeque prepared by the Newburgh Lions Club with food donated by the Lions and Freihofers. More than two dozen organizations and businesses also pitched in to donate services and materials for the event. They are:
