A city of Newburgh police bloodhound played a key role in tracking down a man suspected in two arson fires in the city on Monday.
Police say they were investigating a fire within the Lake Street Apartment complex Monday afternoon when witnesses told them they had seen a suspect flee into the woods.
Police also found a mop bucket that had been placed outside a residence and lit on fire, causing the siding on the building to melt. The front door of a residence was smeared with what appeared to be ketchup.
City of Newburgh Police Officer Curtis Hahne and his Bloodhound K-9 partner “Tank Tebow” searched for the suspect in the woods, trailing the suspect’s scent unti he was located some twenty minutes later in an alleyway connecting Washington Terrace to Broadway.
The suspect was identified as Irving Tucker, 62. Police say his estranged girlfriend lived in the apartment where the fire was set in the early morning hours of May 10th. They also report that Tucker returned to the apartment complex around 3:15 pm but was scared off by residents.
An investigation has led police to tie Tucker to a garbage fire at the city of Newburgh Recreation Center swimming pool that was extinguished by the city of Newburgh Fire Department early Monday morning.
Tucker was charged with the class B felony of Arson in the second degree and the class A misdemeanor of Arson in the fifth degree. He was held pending arraignment.
