Four families will receive the keys to their new homes constructed by employees and volunteers of the Greater Newburgh Habitat for Humanity this coming Saturday.
The four adjoining homes are located on historic East Parmenter Street, which Habitat Newburgh, in partnership with the Leyland Alliance, is reclaiming and transforming from abandoned buildings and empty lots. Plans call for a total of 24 homes it describes as “new-urbanist redevelopment” creating a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood in an historic neighborhood one block away from Washington’s Headquarters. The master plan, prepared by architect Michael Watkins of Duany, Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ) with a new housing design created by Donald Powers Architects, includes small duplex cottages, townhomes, and small single family homes.
In 2010, volunteers completed Phase One of the E. Parmenter Street project. The latest homes have exterior panel walls built by Orange / Ulster BOCES students and were built to meet or exceed Energy Star rating. Phase Two of the project has been funded by the William & Elaine Kaplan Family Foundations.
This Saturday’s celebration will begin with an Open House at 23-29 E. Parmenter Street at 10:30 am, followed by a dedication at 11:30.
