A familiar face is throwing his hat into the ring in the race for a seat on the Town of Newburgh board in the November elections.
Gary MacEntee is the former town recreation director and he recently announced his candidacy for town councilman. MacEntee, a registered member of the Independence Party, said he has asked for that party’s endorsement and is ready to begin a petition drive next month.
Six year ago, MacEntee lost his bid to run as a Republican candidate for the town board.
Two board seats are up for re-election this year: that of deputy superintendent George Woolsey and councilman Gil Piaquadio, both Republicans. Both have said they plan to run again.
Supervisor Wayne Booth says he’s running for another term as well. Democratic challenger Stephen Krasner won the Democratic committee’s endorsement last month. Town clerk Andrew Zarustkie is also up for re-election.
In making his announcement, MacEntee, who is now the recreation director in Blooming Grove, pointed to his 27 years of experience in recreation management where, he said, he built a reputation for increasing programming and revenues while keeping expenditures stable. He also said that spending practices in Newburgh “need serious reviews.”
MacEntee has lived in the Leptondale section of Newburgh for 18 years. He is also a member of the bipartisan Town of Newburgh Advocate Committee.
