City of Newburgh police made two arrests for weapons possessions during separate incidents early Sunday morning.
Suspect Flees Police On Foot
A taxi driver alerted police to the first case, when he called around 3:30 am to report that someone was shooting at him from a silver Toyota Camry that was following the cab.
Sgt. Albrechtsen and Officer Kevin Lahar tracked the Toyota to Van Ness and Lutheran Streets and tried to stop it. The driver failed to stop, polie say, until it pulled over on William Street and a passenger ran from the car.
Officers Carlos Mendez, Ramon Scuadroni and Myra Rude gave chase on foot and apprehended Antonio Gil, 19, of New Britain, CT a short distance away, according to the police. Officers recovered a loaded .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun that the suspect had attempted to discard while fleeing on foot.
Police charged Gil with attempted assault in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second and third degree and reckless endangerment in the first degree.
Three other occupants in the vehicle were additionally charged with reckless endangerment in the firstt degree: Gelacio Tlatelpa, 20, and Jose Balbuena, 18, of Newburgh ,and Christian Leal, 16, of Clifton, NJ.
Fight in Progress Leads to Arrest
About half an hour later, at 4 am, city police seized a handgun on the street after responding to a report of a large fight in progress in the roadway near Liberty Street and Benkard Avenue.
According to police, Officer Hinspeter approached a group of males and he observed one of them, Glendell Wiggins, age 41, of New Windsor, throw an object under a vehicle. Officer Hinspeter immediately retrieved the item, police say, and discovered it to be a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun with the serial numbers removed.
Wiggins was placed under arrest and charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the 2nd and 3rd degree.
