A political action committee calling itself Change Newburgh is reinforcing the calls of others to get Albany to step in to put the city on the road to fiscal recovery.
This week, signs started popping up on public spaces all over the city, asking Albany officials to step in now to cap Newburgh’s exploding tax rate and save homes and jobs.
In an interview with WAMC Public Radio that airs Tuesday, Merridith Ingram, who is involved with Change Newburgh, says the group represents a “core group of people who have moved to the city” and stresses the need for unification of every one who is interested in improving the city. This week the group posted a Call to Action: “Dear Albany” video on its website in which local residents talk about what they love about Newburgh and about their disappointment with failed efforts by city leaders.
Meanwhile, organizers from Community Voices Heard are gearing up for a march down Broadway to City Hall on Wednesday. Their demand is similar: get the state to step in and find another solution to the fiscal crisis besides raising taxes.
