Residents in the town and city of Newburgh lost power on Thursday evening following a thunderstorm that left chucks of icy hail on sidewalks that had been sizziling in 90-degree heat just moments earlier.
A storm that sent hail pummeling cars and pedestrians around 4 pm swept through Newburgh quickly. Central Hudson reported that the fast-moving storm system brought powerful winds, lighting and hail, causing extensive damage to trees and power lines, interrupting electric service to more than 18,000 homes and businesses in the area.
Three thousand four hundred of the affected homes were in Orange County, many in Newburgh where the outages follow a line from Gardinertown Road east to the river. By 7 pm, a third of the customers had their service stored, according to Central Hudson.
