Graduation Week 2011 shone with the smiles of 12 lovely young women and their families as they celebrated four successful years at the Nora Cronin Presentation Academy and looked forward to a future filled with hope and high expectations in high school. Their teachers were visibly moved by the meaning of the occasion, as was their proud Principal, Sr. Yliana Hernández PBVM. Sr. Katherine McKenna PBVM, President of the Board of Trustees, stressed the values of the academy and called the graduates to have courage to act as leaders as they move into a wider world.
Assisted by teachers, Sr. Mary Eileen Troy (8th gr.) and Ms. Kristy Matesic (6th gr.), Sr. Yliana awarded diplomas from the New York Archdiocese Department of Education. Special Subject Awards were presented to: Aylin Aguilar (General Excellence), Jennifer Castelan (Social Studies and Perfect Attendance for 2 years), Jasmin Guerrero (Math and Perfect Attendance for 1 year), Melanie Mendoza (Language Arts), Kelly Mendoza (Religion), and Krishna Lopez (Science, NY State Comptroller’s Award for Character and Justice, Perfect Attendance for 3 years).
Sr. Anne Massell PBVM, Assistant Superintendent of School for the New York Archdiocese, addressed the graduates reminding them that they “ may become whatever they choose…don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t…reflect on the lives of Nano Nagle and Nora Cronin and know that you are loved and cherished and held in the highest esteem.” In the her Graduate’s response, General Excellence winner Aylin Aquliar thanked everyone – moms and dads for their sacrifices and love, volunteers and trustees encouragement, fellow students for the memories and especially the teachers who she called true friends.
NCPA has instituted the prestigious Nano Nagle Award that is presented at each graduation. It is named in honor of the foundress of the Sisters of the Presentation. Nano is credited with starting Ireland’s hedge schools as a way to educate the poorest of children who were discriminated against for the religion. NCPA’s award goes to the student who most exemplifies the school motto: Act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with God. With the assistance of last year’s winner Erika Jimenez (NFA 9th grade), Sr. Yliana presented the 2011 prize to Jennifer Castelan.
