The attempt to approve a 20-year trash removal contract with Taylor Biomass Recycling in Montgomery was voted down by the Newburgh city council by a vote of 4-to-1 on Monday. Last month, a representative of Taylor offered the city a contract that included an initial charge of $66 a ton for disposing of its waste in a new system that turns trash into electricity. Currently the city pays $80 a ton to dispose of its waste.
The proposal came with two stipulations that some city council members found unacceptable: a June deadline was imposed that left the council little time to explore its options and the 20-year contract term meant that it would be locked in even if competitive deals were available in the future.
Even as the city considered whether to contract with Taylor, Orange County officials are expected to negotiate a deal with the new facility, which is scheduled to come on line in December. Mayor Valentine, the only council member to vote in favor of the contract, later said that he concerned whether the will pass along the savings it gets negotiating with Taylor to local municipalities.
