From Ann Kuzmik, City of Newburgh
Fireworks, Music and Art
In the City of Newburgh, it wouldn’t be July 4th without fireworks. With the ongoing financial crisis, the outlook for this favorite tradition once again looked bleak. But, thanks to local businesses, organizations, and individuals, all are invited to celebrate the 4th of July in the City of Newburgh with music, art, and fireworks!
“We are still accepting donations, and we are optimistic that we will raise enough to completely cover the cost,” said July 4th Committee Chair Regina Angelo, who has organized the celebration for more than 30 years. “Last year, the response to our request for donations was tremendous, and we had an even larger fireworks display than we had originally planned. The fireworks are our way of giving back to the community, but again we are seeing the community giving so everyone can enjoy them.”
Fireworks sponsors to date include Severn Trent, Burke Miele & Golden, Stanley Marks & Co. LLP, Torches on the Hudson, LLC; N & N Pizza Shop, Robert Lustbader, DDS; Newburgh Nissan, Adams Fairacre Farms, Janet Gianopoulos, and Mount Saint Mary College. More sponsors are welcome and will be recognized at the event.
Vendor space is available on a first-come, first served basis for $50. To participate in the Art Show or to be a vendor contact Deputy Mayor Regina Angelo at 569-7301, or 565-5429, or Ann Kuzmik at 569-7354.
The schedule is as follows:
Noon-6 p.m. Art Show on the River- Unico Park
6 p.m.- 9 p.m.- Music by Dr. Magkneetoe at Unico Park

Also on July 4, Washington’s Headquarters, corner of Washington & Liberty Streets is hosting the “Grand Celebration: The Red White and Blue Family Pageant”. The Headquarters is celebrating its 161st birthday as the Nation’s first publicly preserved historic site. Festivities include a flag-raising ceremony presided over by “General and Mrs. Grant,” at noon, followed by patriotic songs by the “The Perfect Fourths,” by Dutchess Community College.
A parade of children dressed in red, white and blue will be next, with prizes awarded in the categories of Most Creative, Most Historical, the Best Red, White and Blue decorated stroller and Grand Prize for Best Spirit. After the parade, stay for trivia games in the Museum and a performance by the Golden Songsters in the park. Tours of the historic headquarters are every half hour; admission is free, compliments of Regina Angelo and the Friends of the State Historic Sites of the Hudson Highlands. Finally, to top off the Grand Celebration, the rolling lawns of Washington’s Headquarters will be open to the public for a grand view of the July 4th Fireworks!
