A new non-profit organization in the city of Newburgh will be preparing lunch for children this summer. Starting on Tuesday, July 5, Abraham’s Table, Inc., will be providing the service under contract to the federally-funded Summer Food Services Program. The program runs through August 26. Last year, pastor Rosey Andrews, of the Northeast Gateway to Freedom Church led an ad-hoc volunteer effort to deliver summer lunches after the city gave up its program. Abraham’s Table is a non-profit charitable organization sponsored in part by the Grace United Methodist Church.
The USDA’s Summer Food Services Program provides no-cost lunch to resident children who are 18 years old or younger. The program was created to make nutritious meals available to students who during the summer do not have access to the school meals they receive. Typical meals may include sandwiches, fresh fruit, 100% fruit juice, and low-fat milk.
Lunches will be served at the following locations within the City of Newburgh:

The Summer Food Service Program began in 1968 and is administered by the Food and Nutrition Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is run by approved sponsors, including school districts, local governments, camps or nonprofit organizations. Funding is provided by the USDA and donations. Sites are operated in low-income areas where at least half the children are eligible for free and reduced-price school meals.
