This weekend, the public is invited to see the results of a new collaboration between the Railroad Playhouse and Laurie Perrone’s Summer Glee program for teens.
The Summer Glee program, now in its second year, found a home at the not-for-profit Railroad Playhouse in what is expected to be long-term collaboration. It will present the teen’s choir and caberet production on Friday evening.
Seth Soloway, the co-founder and artistic director at the Railroad Playhouse, explained that the students in the week-long program had the opportunity to participate in classes during the day and watch their teachers prepare for a performance in the evenings.
The teachers are professional actors and they were also at the playhouse to work on a new play, America’s Brightest Star, written by resident playwright Alex Goldberg. Students were able to experience rehearsals throughout the week and see how it all ties together in a performance that debuts Saturday night.
Soloway wants to see this program develop into a longer summer program in the future. “This was a chance to take a baby step,” he said, “with teachers that have incredible credentials and bring experience straight from Broadway.”
Perrone began the Glee Camp last year. She believes the Playhouse will enable it to grow and give more youngsters the opportunity to experience a bit of Manhattan without ever leaving Orange County.
Soloway, says, “To me, the thing that is exciting is that it is a real great combination. We want to be an educational home. We want to bring highly qualified artists up to the area and we want to workshop new plays. This was a chance to do all three.”
The Glee Camp ran from June 27 through July 1, and was open to students ages 10-17 and culminates with two student performances. The teachers who led the program included Alex Goldberg, Catia Ojeda, who appeared in101 Dalmatians the Musical (National Tour); Kelly Scanlon, who appeared in Funny or Die.com; and Aaron Davis, who appeared in “Golf the Musical” (Off Broadway).
The Glee Show performances are Friday July 1st at 6:30 pm and 8 pm.
The World Premiere of a Staged Reading of America’s Brightest Stars is Saturday, July 2, at 8 pm.
Tickets for both shows can be purchased on line at www.rrplayhouse.org.
