Children are invited to take a turn with the conducting baton this Saturday when the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra presents Summer Pops –An American Salute, a free concert at 4:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the Newburgh Free Academy. Organizers moved the concert from its originally scheduled location in Downing Park due to high-heat forecasts.
Rick Regan, the principal trombonist of the GNSO, will be back to take up the baton after a hugely successful GNSO conducting debut last summer.
He will lead this tribute to American composers featuring music by Morton Gould, Robert Russell Bennett, John Philip Sousa, Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. Two of the most sought-after area soloists, Jody Weatherstone and Erich Tusch, will sing selections from Porgy and Bess, George Gershwin’s enduring masterpiece.
Concert organizers say the real super stars of the Summer Pops concert are the renowned “Mini Maestros,” the children in the audience who can be counted on to steal the show. Every child present is invited to take a turn at conducting the orchestra in the lively Washington Post March following a brief lesson. Student-musicians, extended the opportunity to perform with a live orchestra, will also be joining GNSO.
