From Ann Kuzmik, City of Newburgh
The public is invited and encouraged to attend upcoming presentations by the City of Newburgh Charter Review Commission.
The Charter Review Commission will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 3rd floor, City Hall, 83 Broadway. On Thursday, Aug. 4 they will make a presentation to the City Council at the regularly scheduled work session, which begins at 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers.
A public hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at the City Activity Center, 401 Washington Street, to receive comment on the proposed revisions, which will be on the ballot as a referendum in the Nov. 8, 2011 election.
The proposed revisions include legislation which would establish a districting commission to divide the City into four wards, and change the structure of the Council from a five-member body elected at large to seven members, with the Mayor and two Council people elected at large and four elected by ward. The Charter revisions would also establish criteria for selection and removal of a City Manager and designation of an Acting and/or Interim City Manager, and would include technical amendments to affected portions of the Charter to bring them into compliance with the changes.
