Doo-wop. According to Wikipedia, it’s the a style of vocal-based rhythm and blues music that developed in African American communities in the 1940s and achieved mainstream popularity in the 1950s and early 1960s. Built upon vocal harmony, doo-wop was one of the most mainstream, pop-oriented R&B styles of the 1950s and 1960s.
You can decide for yourself if this defines the easy-listening, foot-tapping harmonic vocals that you can hear every Tuesday evening at the Newburgh waterfront, starting August 2.
The Ferry Godmother has pulled together this free music series where you can hear a capella, rock & roll, funk & soul, and a tribute to Nat King Cole from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Tuesday. The grand finale will be a 50’ & 60 dance party.

August 2, 2011 – Days Gone By
Days Gone By is an authentic, a capella, doowop group, reminiscent of those great street corner doowop groups of the 50’ and early 60’, that ushered in the “new rock n’ roll” sound. The group has been together in various incarnations for nearly 20 years. They bring back the sounds of the Drifters, Skyliners, Jesters, Belmonts, Dubs, Flamingos, Harptones , The Crests and many more.
August 9, 2011 – Fat City
Fat City brings to the stage an eclectic mix of funk, jumping blues, soul shaking R&B and tasty Rock favorites to create a seasoned gumbo
Michaels presents his songs with a fiery passion, delivering tunes with enough embroidery to redesign but not enough to totally overwhelm the melody. His ability to perform a tearjerker or humorous as he takes you from the dramatic to the comic with ease. You’ll fall in love with his amazing voice & presence on stage.
August 16 – Corner Shot Band
Corner Shot is a four-piece band from the Sullivan and Orange County area specializing in Rock, Funk, Classic Rock, anything that gets you moving to the beat. We play everything from 50′s rockabilly on up to today’s music. When we start groovin’ we get you movin’!
