The Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation celebrated the end of summer with a Brunch to Build Homes on September 10 on behalf of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh. The Saturday fundraiser, held at Gully’s, located on the Newburgh Waterfront, attracted dozens of union members and raised a total of $2,000. Labor sponsors of the event included the HVALF, the Wappingers Congress of Teachers, American Federation of Government Employees Local 3740, Civil Service Employees Association Local 302, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500 and Operating Engineers Local 30.
“We’re proud to support Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh. The City of Newburgh has been especially hard hit by the economic forces that have been afflicting the middle class here in the Hudson Valley and across America. It is imperative that we do what we can to help rebuild,” said Mike Salvia, Vice President for the Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation.
“Habitat for Humanity is thankful for labor’s support. This goes to show you what we can accomplish when we work together,” said Dr. Cathy Collins, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh.
Collins also mentioned the group’s upcoming fundraising breakfast on Tuesday, September 20 at 8 am at Anthony’s Pier 9 in New Windsor. Reservations for the Building Houses, Building Hope Breakfast are a must and can be made by contacting salbrecht@habitatnewburgh.org.
Since affiliation with Habitat for Humanity International in 1999, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh has organized thousands of volunteers and acquired dozens of abandoned properties. By rebuilding these houses, Habitat creates affordable housing for families in need and makes Newburgh a more vibrant City, which benefits the entire community.
